Facebook Remote Log Out Feature

Facebook update its security setting on almost daily basis to prevent its users from any kind of hacking and tracking. So now Facebook has launched a new security feature that will let users log out from any device remotely. This is designed to protect users who access Facebook from multiple devices, but will also help safeguard users against hacking.

According to Facebook;
“Have you ever borrowed a friend’s phone to use Facebook and then forgotten to log out before you handed it back? Maybe you logged in from a public computer, but accidentally walked away with your Facebook session still active. Now, you can see if you’re still logged in on other devices and immediately log out on those devices from one central control in your account.”

The upgrade is rolling out gradually to all users. Once it’s live for you, access is via the “Account Security” section of your Account Settings page. You should be able to all your active sessions along with information such as the login time, device name if you’ve previously named it through the login notifications feature, the approximate location of the login based on IP address, and browser and operating system.

The blog post notes that if someone has accessed your account without your permission, you should be able to shut down the unauthorized log-in before resetting your password and taking other steps to secure your account and computer.

This update makes a lot of sense. In the mobile age, people are increasingly accessing Facebook from multiple locations and devices, and a central way to manage that would be very handy. Also, while the blog post describes the example of unauthorized access as “unlikely”, I know several friends who have had their accounts hacked or accessed in some way and their status updates filled with spam. While some less technically minded users might find using this feature a bit daunting, there are quite a lot of people who have enough technical savvy to make good use of it.

Average Age of Facebook Users!

Facebook has now become worlds most used Social Networking website by almost every age and type of people around the world. So do you know that the average age of a Facebook user is 38 years old? That information comes from the team at Flow town, who has compiled the latest demographic statistics about Facebook users and social network usage in general. Perhaps more surprising was that the vast majority of users are now older than 38 years old, illustrating that the company has come a long way since first launching exclusively to college students.

One other interesting statistic found in the data was that users who are 18 to 29 use social networks almost as much as they use email. Other reports have recently suggested that the younger users (younger than 18) use social networks more than email. Check out all the details in the chart below!

Massive Spam Attack On Facebook

Hijacked accounts, promises of free iPads, IQ quizzes, and ring tones - these are all part of a massive spam attack hitting Facebook right now.

I’ve received a Facebook private message that appeared to be from a friend inviting me to an event titled “Get @iPad_ for Free Event!!”. (See below). Other users have reported wall messages and status updates with phrases like “u have to check out this website its glitchin right now and sending out ipads to everyone for free!”. Similar spam messages have appeared on Twitter, via hacked accounts.

A Facebook spokesman told IDG the iPad scam was affecting “an extremely small percentage of people on Facebook” but they took the threat seriously.
Meanwhile, Facebook users have also reported spammy chat messages touting IQ quizzes and mobile ring tones.

The messages say "LOL is this you?" and are accompanied by a link that looks like it leads to a video on Facebook, one victim told CNET. In his case, clicking the link directed to a Web page with a "404-Page Not Found" error message and his account sent the spam out to at least one of his friends, he said.
The spam was also reported on Twitter, but at this point the outbreak seems to be minor.

Facebook Launches Live Streaming Channel

Facebook Live is now available on the social network's site.
Facebook has launched a live-streaming channel designed to provide its users with content detailing what's happening at the company's headquarters.

Dubbed Facebook Live, the new service is basically a PR channel for the company. According to a representative, Facebook Live "is a natural extension of our blog and is a way to communicate with our users more directly." Facebook will be airing interviews with people that stop by its headquarters, highlighting its new products, and trying to capture the "activity already happening at Facebook." Whereas it was doing all this before with text, now it wants to up the ante with video.

Content will be available on Facebook Live all day, every day. When shows are live, Facebook users can comment and potentially have their questions answered by the hosts. After a show airs, users will be able to go back to the Facebook Live page and watch a rerun of it at their convenience. Facebook Live can be embedded into other Web sites, or users can add a Facebook Live page to their profile pages to have quick access to the service.

It's worth noting that Facebook isn't getting in the content business to compete with services like Ustream or Livestream, which enable users to create their own live-streaming channels and push content out to viewers. Instead, Facebook Live (which is powered by Livestream, in fact) seems to be little more than a way for the company to pat itself on the back and tout its products.

But driving the point home that Facebook isn't getting into the video-streaming business seemed to be paramount to the social network. A Facebook representative was quick to point out that the social network "has no plans to get into content production."

Facebook Dominates Social Network in World Map

A lot changes in three years, especially in the social networking space. The mind behind xkcd comics – “a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math and language” that has garnered a large following of the geeky sort – has updated his original 2007 Map of Online Communities to show what happens to social networks over time. The most significant change? The mountainous region of Facebook has experienced massive geological growth, expanding from a small nook hanging off MySpace to become the uber-continent dwarfing the other social network islands, bays and territories. Check out the full 2010 Map of Online Communities below.

While the 2007 Map of Online Communities measured a network’s size by the sheer number of users, xkcd has refined his measurements for 2010 – the size on this map represents the volume of daily social activity on the site, like messages, status updates and games played. Take a look at the Map of Online Communities 2010 below and notice the dominance of Facebook, the Great Firewall of China blocking QQ and Happy Farm off from the rest of the land masses, and the perseverance of MMO Isle.

If you have some spare time, it’s worth heading over to the larger image of the 2010 Map and looking at some of the detailed landmarks that populate this world of social networks. For instance, take a gander at Twitter island – notice the Bieber Bay making inroads into the land? And how about the Sea of Protocol Confusion that separates Twitter from Skype?

It’s probably no mistake that the large chunk of Facebook carved out in the name of Farmville is just underneath the Northern Wasteland of Unread Updates. Since the 2007 map, lots more Facebook-specific land masses have cropped up – take a stroll over to the Plains of Awkwardly Public Family Interactions for some entertainment, or try to see if you can locate the Privacy Controls outpost in the pit of lava behind Duckface Mountains.

This map follows on the heels of a Flowtown map that also paid homage to the original xkcd 2007 Map of Online Communities. Both 2010 versions show the dominance of Facebook, but it’s interesting to compare them to see how different measurements, perspectives and imaginations can create different social network landscapes.

Successful Facebook Advertisement Strategy

Today we know facebook is one of the effective platform for marketing and advertising. Every website wants to get connect with facebook and get their potential customers. Now facebook advertisement leaves all other advertisers and publishers behind and has become one of the most successful advertisement arena. Facebook is going after brand advertisers as their primary revenue channel, hoping to take dollars away from television advertisers as their share of the attention economy continues to increase. It appears that the strategy is a smart one as Facebook now accounts for 23 percent of all ad impressions in the United States. Contrast that with Google who accounts for 2.3 percent of impressions.

This was a strategy highlighted by Fred Vogelstein’s 2009 article about the “Great Wall Of Facebook“. The company has been incredibly effective at driving attention to their site, with users spending hours on the site every month. For Facebook that attention has translated into impressions, many of which still haven’t been monetized (there is plenty of unfilled homepage inventory).

While Facebook’s self-serve advertising platform has produced tremendous results, the company is still at the very beginning of their push for brand advertisers. With numbers like the one’s published by comScore today, there’s no doubt that the company should have no problem in attracting those advertisers as they now own one quarter of the impressions in the U.S.

Facebook Registered "Face" Trademark

Facebook has been registered the word "Face" as a trademark which is issued by the US Patent And Trademark Office as a “Notice Of Allowance” for trademarking the word “Face”

Facebook has been stepping up their efforts to fend off companies who leverage their name as part of a site and now Facebook has one more arsenal in their ongoing battle against supposed trademark infringers, like Lamebook, who has now been blocked from posting any content on Facebook, crippling the site’s traffic. Given how comment the word “face” is, it’s incredible that the Trademark Office has let the company trademark the word for “Telecommunication services, namely, providing online chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among computer users in the field of general interest and concerning social and entertainment subject matter, none primarily featuring or relating to motoring or to cars”.

While Apple’s recent FaceTime product isn’t a chat room, one has to wonder if it would infringe on Facebook’s soon-to-be-owned trademark on the word “Face” since it’s technically a “telecommunication service”.
